WKA STUDENT/INSTRUCTOR ENRICHMENT AND CROSS TRAINING PROGRAMS

“Traditional Karate” was born from the amalgamation of numerous Chinese and Okinawan “styles”. Traditional Karate filled the societal need for physical education, and well trained law enforcement and military personnel in an ancient civilized society. So cross training and cooperation between Dojos and styles was the NORM in the Budo culture that gave birth to “Traditional Karate”. But the leadership of Traditional Karate in the 20th century exported the art throughout the world, and quickly discovered that it was politically/financially advantageous to create an insulated culture, that divided Traditional Karate not only by style, but also by organizational affiliations. In many cases, cross training was prohibited. It is NOT the goal of the WKA to train people in “other styles” or other professions. The goal of all WKA enrichment and cross training programs is to teach and enhance the understanding of TRADITIONAL KARATE TECHNIQUES (throwing, locking, weapons, etc..) that have been lost or diminished over time. These programs were specifically designed to ENRICH and AUGMENT the training in WKA member Dojos.

FOR STUDENTS 16 YEARS OLD AND UP

The WKA-SDSCP is a 3 month program that is administered via short online educational units, and 1 weekend seminar that will include educational training, lectures and teaching observations. The WKA-SDSCP will give the participant a practical understanding of modifying and teaching Traditional Karate for the purpose of street self defense. Much of Traditional Karate’s true self defense applications have been lost over time. Many instructors try to fill in those gaps with bunkai they create from the movements found in Kata. While these creative endeavors make for fun training, more often than not, incorrect things are being taught. If taught properly, Krav Maga and police/military style hand to combat training restores much of the Traditional Karate that has been lost. The WKA-SDSCP teaches Traditional Karate instructors how to view, apply and teach Traditional Karate techniques for the purpose of disabling an attacker with professional criminal tactics, and superior speed and strength. Police/military techniques for dealing with the adrenaline dump caused by great fear and stress will be taught. This military and law enforcement science is not taught in most Traditional Karate Dojos, because most instructors are not police/military personnel. Adding this knowledge and training to your Dojo will give your students a better chance of staying safe, and will help to distinguish your Dojo above others in your community. The Self Defense philosophy of the World Karate Association is simply getting people home safe. The 2 goals of the Self Defense Certification program are to give WKA members a great advantage over any attacker, and to promote WKA member Dojos as a place of safety education in the community. We highly recommend this program for students of all levels, instructors and Dojo owners. This program has been designed by LAW ENFORCEMENT PROFESSIONALS (not Karate practitioners) to be a LIFE SAVER! Graduates of the WKA-SDSCP will be listed in the REGISTRY OF SELF DEFENSE SKILLS INSTRUCTORS on the World Karate Association website.

FOR STUDENTS 16 YEARS OLD AND UP

The WKA-BSCP is a 1 weekend seminar that will include educational training, lectures and teaching observations. The WKA-BSCP will give the participant a practical understanding of the “sweet science” of Boxing for both sport and self defense. Traditional Karate originally came from a mixture of Kung Fu and Okinawan Boxing. So boxing was a part of Traditional Karate from the start. But the over-standardization of Traditional Karate curriculums has largely cut out the practice and application of circular punching techniques, heavy bag training, and upper body “Tai Sabaki” (body shifting). These original attributes of Traditional Karate were replaced by a focus on straight-line punching techniques, and maintaining an erect body posture with the idea of generating maximal power. The goal of the WKA-BSCP is to revive the practice of Boxing techniques, without compromising the existing integrity of the Traditional Karate style being taught. In other words, adding some boxing drills to your Dojo’s curriculum will greatly enhance Traditional Karate training, make your students all around better fighters, and provide your students with enhanced self defense skills. Graduates of the WKA-BSCP will be listed in the REGISTRY OF BOXING SKILLS INSTRUCTORS on the World Karate Association website.

An important thought for Dojo owners

At this point in history, it’s obvious that less and less adults are enrolling in Karate Dojos. They are gravitating towards MMA, boxing and simply going to the gym to lift weights. It is our hope that adding a boxing component to your Karate training will help to attract more adults to your Dojo.

FOR STUDENTS 16 YEARS OLD AND UP

The WKA-TSCP is a 3 weekend program. Master Gichin Funakoshi taught 9 throwing techniques that were originally found in all styles of Traditional Karate. Master Funakoshi and Jigoro Kano (the Founder of Judo) shared a Dojo together, and they shared their masterful knowledge with each other openly. They also taught each others students to enrich their knowledge and training. The WKA-TSCP will teach the 9 throws of Traditional Karate which will include falling and rolling techniques for student safety. We do not recommend this program for anyone that has back or joint problems. Graduates of the WKA-TSCP will be listed in the REGISTRY OF THROWING SKILLS INSTRUCTORS on the World Karate Association website.

WKA CHILDRENS TRAINING PROGRAMS

FOR STUDENTS 8-12 YEARS OLD

The WKA-FSP includes 10 short online units and 1-day training camp. All children look up to their Sensei, and some even dream of being a Sensei one day. The WKA-FSP teaches children what the job of a teacher truly is, and will gain great insights into the importance of the teachers roll in a student’s life. Children learn best by doing. So the WKA-FSP will take the students on an imaginary journey that starts from opening their own Dojo (which involves math skills and community minded thinking) to teaching classes (which involves planning for the individual needs of students of different levels and abilities) and dealing with problem students (which involves self examination of their own behavior).

We highly recommend this program is made part of your children’s curriculum at the 8th-9th kyu level to give depth to their enthusiasm, support their early development in Traditional Karate and support Dojos for optimal student development and retention. Children who graduate the WKA-FSP will receive an official letter from the World Karate Association to the children’s school requesting they receive extra credit in all subjects for graduating this multidimensional enrichment program. This is a truly wonderful program for kids, and their names will be listed in the REGISTRY OF FUTURE SENSEIS on the World Karate Association website.

The primary goal of the WKA-JHSAP is to encourage habitual daily exercise for general health, goal oriented Traditional Karate practice, a lifetime of healthy food choices, excellent study habit for academic excellence, and good sleep patterns to optimize brain health. Children will learn how to share their health science knowledge with their friends, family members and classmates. Children who graduate the WKA-JHSAP will receive an official letter from the World Karate Association to the children’s school requesting they receive extra credit for graduating this international health science program. We suggest that Dojo owners make the WKA-JHSAP a mandatory part of their children’s Traditional Karate program to promote children’s health education in the community.
